The nature cottage in Klarenbeek with its red shutters

Nature cottage Klarenbeek

A picture-book cottage with red shutters, between the Veluwe and the river IJssel.

More than a hundred years old, the cottage was once a day labourer's house. Today it sits on roughly 7,000 m² of land: a garden right around the house, a wild meadow full of life, a food forest in the making, and a young forest running to the railway.

🗺 The land

From road to railway — cottage, meadow and forest. With an elevation map and a drawing.

🌱 Food forest

Apple trees, berries and Vaccinium in the sunny spot — built on principles of letting things go wild.

🌿 Nature & red list

Native species get their space back. American oak and black cherry are slowly phased out.

🍂 Through the year

What flowers, what moves, and what you spot from the bedroom window — season by season.

🦌 Wildlife

Footage from the trail camera — roe deer, a hare, a buck with full antlers.

♻️ Composting

Two bins, two rules — what goes to the food forest and what goes to the council.

The surroundings

Walking, cycling and mountain biking straight from the door. 50 m away lies the medieval Bandijk dyke and an old river pool left by the IJssel. 3 km further is the Bussloo lake and recreation area. Within cycling distance: the Hanseatic towns of Zutphen and Deventer, the Nijenbeek castle ruin, and — in summer — the Loenen–Dieren steam train.

April brings wood anemone and lesser celandine; in autumn the Virginia creeper turns red. From the bedroom windows, with a bit of luck, you'll spot a roe deer or a squirrel. Birds: flycatchers, woodpeckers, tits, nuthatches and treecreepers.

“More than a nature cottage as it ought to be.”
